HSS was founded on 20 November 1989 in Zagreb, claiming the name and inheritance of the party founded by Radić and Maček before the Second World War. The original HSS was disbanded in 1941, though a small part of it was active in Tito's partisan movement and for a short time after 1945.
The modern party's leader, Zlatko Tomčić was the chairman of the Parliament in 2000 - 2004, when the party had 16 representatives.

The flag of HSS is prescribed in the party's statutes (website) as a Croatian tricolor flag with the party's emblem in the middle. The flag of HSP is to
be seen hoisted on their headquarters in Zagreb, Zvonimirova Street.
The emblem of HSS is the Croatian checky shield bordered with gold, surrounded with two tricolor flags and topped with a green field bearing "HSS" in golden letters.
